the influence of radio and the birth of DJ Gab

i remember having made a video or a post about the whole story of the radio station, but ulitin ko na para may copy yung website.

earliest memories ko about the radio is from my summer vacations when i was a smol kid. babiyahe kami ng tatay ko papunta kung saan saan. at yung tanging entertainment namin sa mga biyahe na yun ay kung anong radio station ang sagap ng antenna ng sasakyan. minsan kasi lumalayo kami to the point na yung station na pinapakinggan namin ay yung local na ng province. it was a good source of "new" music and i liked listening to the DJs mapa-drama o comedy man yung show. ang naaalala ko, may station pa noon na 12pm yung drama show nila which was strange for me kasi sanay ako na gabi yung drama. then meron yung mga tumatanggap ng callers sa gabi and it would range from drama talaga to very funny conversations between the DJs and the caller.

pag-uwi mula sa vacation, nadala ko na yung hobby na makinig sa radyo. doon sa bahay ng nanay ko pag weekday ng gabi, mga 9pm siguro, may fav show kami sa MOR ata or YES fm. papakinggan namin at matatawa then matutulog na bago pa matapos yung show. may time pa nga binuksan ko ang radyo tapos nagtataka ako bakit hindi pa nagsimula yung show kasi lagpas 9 na. ayun pala weekend nun and it took me so long to realize.

nung teenager nako saka ko lang ulit naalala yung mga moments na yun. yung paghiga ko sa sasakyan habang dinadamdam yung pinapatugtog sa radyo habang bumabiyahe. yung tawa ko sa kwarto habang nakikinig sa isang DJ na babae at isang DJ na lalaki. at yung tuwa sa tuwing maririnig yung mga paborito kong kanta na hinihiling ko na ipatugtog nila. at doon na pumasok sa isip ko na tumingin online kung mayroon ba na posibilidad na ako mismo ay maging radio DJ kahit for fun lang, pero nasa isip ko hanggang ngayon, mangyayari lang siguro yung ganung "DJ for a day" kung sumikat ako online at nagkaroon ng maraming clout. so hindi pwede yun unless gawin ko na actual job which my parents wouldn't be happy about. until i saw how people owned their own transmitters. usually for communication, but there were these people called pirates. i looked a bit deeper and found out that i'm going to be one of them.

mahal ang transmitter kahit maliit lang and low powered, so i had to put aside the dream several times throughout the years. until i had an opportunity noong 2022. maybe a month after the lowest point of my life. so i pushed for it to happen like it was life or death (pretty much was.)

i got the transmitter and it was time to finally put some work into the station. ang pinaka matagal na process ay ang calibration from the antenna to the audio settings to the peripherals. until now i still have a lot to learn and i have to upgrade my antenna to reach the station's full potential. ito ang pinaka nagustuhan ko sa radio ko. it's not that easy. so i have to work hard to make it happen.

i had a radio show that ran for a few months nung 2023 before ako mag-aral ulit. it was called The Midnight Show with DJ Gab. nagpatugtog kami kada Thursday from 11pm - 1am. natuto ako bumuo ng program and flow ng show with every broadcast. my host voice (?) isn't as good as i'd want it to be nor as it as energetic as it is supposed to be, but i've had the most fun broadcasting and making a fool out of myself just so i can build my hours on air.

these days i mostly use the transmitter so i can play music from my computer to the amplifier upstairs which has a radio. para todo ingay ako minsan dito sa bahay. though i still have a couple plans for future broadcasts. maybe after i upgrade my antenna. i'll let you know naman.

p.s. don't snitch on me ty

old version of my setup. i had to manually put it all together every thursday evening. kapagod.

the amplifier listening to my broadcast

ito earliest (and only) video i have of testing out the transmitter's output using my tiny radio.
